Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is surgery to increase the size of a woman's breast. Augmentation surgery is achieved by placement of an implant either behind the muscle or just behind the breast tissue. You now have the option of using saline (salt water) breast implants or silicone breast implants. Silicone breast implants have only recently become available to everyone seeking breast enhancement. Silicone breast implants have been used for years in people requiring breast reconstruction. Dr. Rumley has been using silicone breast implants since 1998 on these patients. To learn more about silicone and saline breast implants, you can go to: www.allerganandinamed.com and www.breastimplantsafety.org

Breast augmentation can usually be carried out on women 18 years or older after the breast has finished developing. You must be 22 years or older to receive silicone breast implants. Augmentation can be performed in women either before or after having children. It is particularly effective in women who have lost fullness in their breast after childbearing. It can also be used in combination with a breast lift to increase fullness in the breasts as well as elevating the position of the breast tissue and nipple. the main goal of breast augmentation surgery is to create a natural appearing and feeling breast that others would not think were augmented. Breastfeeding and nipple sensation should remain intact following the procedure. Many women have breast asymmetry prior to surgery, and while this can be improved, it may not be completely corrected.

During your consultation, Dr. Rumley will ask you what size breast you desire. Because bra sizes vary, it is beneficial to bring pictures of women with breast sizes that you feel would look good on you. Dr. Rumley will discuss your desired breast size and shape as well as placement of the implant and incisions that will be used. Dr. Rumley will perform a breast examination during your consultation. He will discuss the risks and goals of surgery. the main risks include capsular contracture or hardening of the tissue around the implant, implant rupture, implant malposition, and others which will be discussed.

Before surgery, you will be asked to stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications ten days prior. If you smoke, you should stop three weeks before and after surgery. You will see Dr. Rumley's nurse one to two weeks before surgery. She will go over all your post operative/recovery instructions.

Breast Augmentation is an outpatient procedure. It is performed under general anesthesia and takes one to two hours. After breast augmentation, please follow our Breast Augmentation Home-Care Instructions.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast lift, technically called mastopexy, is surgery to uplift and improve the shape of a female breast that sags, but is proportionate with the body frame, has lost firmness and skin elasticity, has a flatter elongated shape, has a nipple that points downward, and has stretched skin and an enlarged areola (the pigment skin surrounding the nipple).

A breast lift is appropriate for women who wish to improve breast shape and position. When an increase in breast volume is also desired, breast implants may be inserted in conjuntion with a breast lift (See breast augmentation).

While a breast lift does not generally affect breast function, women who are planning future pregnancies should discuss this with Dr. Rumley. The changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy can minimize or reverse the improvement a breast lift provides. Likewise, plans for significant weight loss should be discussed.

During your consultation, Dr. Rumley will discuss with you your goals with regard to breast size and shape as well as incisions that will be used. Dr. Rumley will perform a breast examination as well.

Mastopexy is an outpatient procedure. It is performed under general anesthesia.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction is a surgical procedure to restore the appearance of a breast for women who have had a breast removed (mastectomy) to treat breast cancer. The surgery rebuilds the breast contour and, if you desire, the nipple and areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple). Most women who have had a mastectomy can have reconstruction. Those who have had lumpectomy usually do not need reconstruction. There are often many options to consider. During your consultation, you and Dr. Rumley can explore what's best for you.

Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction surgery is a procedure that removes skin and fatty tissue from excessively large breast. It is also called a Reduction Mammaplasty. Many women that have excessively large breast complain of medical problems like back and neck pain, shoulder pain, skin irritation, breathing difficulties and numbness in the hands. Breast reduction is often considered a reconstructive procedure.

Overly large breast cause many young women emotional distress. Developing extremely large breast at a very young age, when a girl is especially self-conscious about her body, can cause severe emotional distress.

For many woman, extremely large, pendulous breast can cause considerable physical discomfort and functional problems, as well as embarrassment. The majority of women that seek reduction surgery do so for physical relief rather than for cosmetic improvement.

During your consultation, Dr. Rumley will perform a breast examination. Dr. Rumley will discuss the risks and benefits of surgery. Your scar will be similar to an achor like design. The scars are permanent and may vary from being inconspicuous to very prominent depending on how you heal. The scars do not bother most women since they no longer have the physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts.
